Director of Studies

Start Date: September 2020

Duration or End Date: 2 year contract

1700 euro (31.8 per cent deducted for income and social tax)

Essential role requirements

You must have a CELTA, Trinity TESOL, or equivalent initial teaching qualification and have started or completed Delta, DipTESOL, or MA TESOL. A YL qualification and IH experience is desirable. You must have a minimum of post-initial qualification experience, including two years in academic management. 

Additionally, the ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience of and enthusiasm for creating and promoting new products (such as online/blended courses)
  • A willingness to share your expertise and experience with the team by organizing and providing high-quality teacher training on a regular basis

Job Description: International House Riga is looking for a new Director of Studies to manage our dynamic team of teachers. IH Riga has over 30 members of teaching staff (including modern language teachers) and has a student body of more than 1,800, the majority under the age of 18.

Our Senior Team consists Director of Studies, ADoSs and/or Senior Teachers and provides day-to-day guidance and constantly works to improve our systems and procedures. The Director of studies leads the academic management team and is responsible for maintaining teaching and training excellence through observations and feedback, weekly training seminars and IH courses.  Working closely with our teachers, the DoS ensures teaching quality and client satisfaction works to maintain a positive working environment for all teaching staff.

The DoS is also responsible for the running of the LanguageCert exams centre, Cambridge CELTA and Delta M1 exams, updating end of course tests, placement testing, meeting with publishers and helping to organise social, cultural and educational events for staff and students.

The DoS needs to work with the Managing Director and marketing managers to continue to enhance the school's online presence and reputation within Latvia and IHWO.
The DoS is also expected to teach up to 9 timetabled hours per week and be available for cover lessons as the need arises.

There are exciting training opportunities available, including training as a teacher trainer, CELTA trainer, Language Cert examiner and examiner trainer as well as organising and participating in local and international conferences. 

Other benefits

  • A fully-paid induction course and up to 10 hours of Latvian lessons (subject to take up). 
  • Flights are reimbursed up to 300 EUR for each academic year
  • The school is able to provide a single studio flat in the city centre at a reduced rate of 100 EUR or 200 EUR for a one bedroom flat. This includes bills (capped) except TV and internet.
  • The school assists all new full time teachers to obtain Latvian residency and to open bank accounts. The school also offers emergency medical insurance.
  • There are 31 days paid holidays (including public holidays) per 12 month contract.

EFL/YL Teachers

Start Date: September 2020

Duration or End Date: June 2021 or August 2021 for 9 or 12-month contracts

Salary: The teacher salary is 1000 EUR - 1300 EUR depending on qualifications and experience. The starting salary we offer to newly qualified teachers is the average middle class income in Latvia.

Essential role requirements

We are looking for committed CELTA / TESOL/ DELTA qualified teachers who are interested in their future professional development with the right to work in the EU.

We are currently seeking the following:

1. Teens and Adults Teachers (levels   B1 - C1, aged between 15 and adult).

2. VYL and YL Teachers (working mainly with learners aged between 3 and 14). Special seminars and training are organized for teachers of these age groups.

 Job Description: IH Riga is friendly school with a wide range of students of different ages and backgrounds which offers a competitive salary and low cost accommodation.

Each teacher has a variety of classes, encompassing different levels and age groups. An average of 23 clock hours per week, with an additional 1 - 2 hours per week dedicated to training, development and admin. Timetables differ, but the majority of classes are taught on site. Spilt days are kept to a minimum.

  • Accommodation: Low cost shared or single accommodation in the city centre is provided by the school for a monthly rent of 100 EUR including all bills (capped), except TV/internet and electricity.

  • Holiday: There are up to 31 days paid holidays (including public holidays) for 12 month contract and up to 29 days paid holidays for 9 month contract.
